The Biggest Absence: Lionel Messi

For the third consecutive year, Lionel Messi has been named to the MLS All-Star roster — and for the third consecutive year, he won’t actually play. Messi and Inter Miami teammate Rodrigo De Paul were both excused under a new policy agreed between MLS and the MLS Players Association ahead of this season, under which clubs hold individual conversations with players upon their exit from the World Cup to determine an appropriate rest and return-to-training timeline. It’s a notably different approach from a year ago, when MLS actually suspended Messi for one match after he skipped the 2025 All-Star Game without a similar arrangement in place — a decision Inter Miami co-owner Jorge Mas publicly called “draconian” at the time.

Other Notable Changes

Messi and De Paul weren’t the only late adjustments to the roster. Golden Boot leader Hugo Cuypers was removed after being sold to Liga MX side Monterrey, while Mbekezeli Mbokazi was ruled out through injury despite his standout fan-vote showing. Stepping in to fill those spots: Inter Miami midfielder Yannick Bright, Vancouver Whitecaps midfielder Andrés Cubas, Houston Dynamo forward Guilherme, and Chicago Fire forward Philip Zinckernagel, who returns for his second consecutive All-Star selection after a 2025 campaign that produced 30 goal contributions.

The Stars Who Are Playing

Son Heung-min and Thomas Müller headline the reshaped roster, giving MLS genuine international star power even without Messi involved. They’re joined by a strong supporting cast that includes Evander, Sam Surridge, Petar Musa and Richie Laryea — the Toronto FC full-back who started every match for Canada at this summer’s World Cup and ranks among just five MLS defenders this season with multiple goals and multiple assists. Charlotte FC, as the host club, has three representatives of its own: USMNT captain Tim Ream, along with Pep Biel and Ashley Westwood. Goalkeeping duties will be shared between selections including Matt Freese of New York City FC and Maxime Crépeau of Orlando City.

Liga MX has countered with a 24-player squad of its own, led by Toluca manager Antonio Mohamed, who arrives fresh off winning the 2026 Concacaf Champions Cup with his club. Toluca contribute four players to the roster, Cruz Azul — 2025 Concacaf Champions Cup winners — lead all clubs with five representatives, and CF Pachuca add four more. Four Liga MX players featured at this summer’s World Cup for Mexico: goalkeeper Carlos Acevedo, defenders Jesús Gallardo and Israel Reyes, and midfielder Erik Lira, while defender Willer Ditta represented Colombia in the tournament.
